Newton House Centre for Academic Tuition

SUBJECTS      We provide private tuition  (all UK examination boards) in the following Science subjects:

Maths, Physics and Chemistry (or Combined Sciences) to GCSE level,

Maths and Physics to AS and A Level,

Engineering Maths (up to university first year degree level),  for civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical and production engineering, quantity surveying and building. 

(In addition, we can tutor Keystage 2 upwards,  in Maths, Science and English (a limited number of children).

TUTOR        Ir. John Williams BSc(Eng), MSc(Eng), CEng, MICE, MHKIE, Chartered Civil, Geotechnical and Structural Engineer, now in semi-retirement.

In addition to a lifetime's working experience as a professional Chartered Engineer in UK and in the Far East, I have experience as a secondary school teacher and as a private tutor in mathematics and the sciences. I currently provide one-to-one tuition to 14 to 29 year old students, both boys and girls. Having considerable engineering design and construction experience, I can often show students practical applications of their studies, of which the  cloistered teaching profession may not be aware.

TUITION 

The tuition is given in Newton House, Torquay in a quiet, comfortable, secure environment.  Tuition is tailored to the student's individual needs. This is achieved by an introductory discussion with the student (and a parent, where appropriate), followed by continuing assessment during the one-to-one tutorial sessions that follow. The tutorial sessions are arranged as a series of regular lessons (for students who need continuous assistance),  or ad-hoc tutorials where their needs are less demanding and perhaps help is only necessary for occasional topics. My students come mainly from the Torbay area and a few from further afield e.g. Totnes, Teignmouth, Kingsbridge, Plymouth, Exeter, etc. For students living further away, who would like to improve their possible grades, or gain entry to Torquay Boys and Girls Grammar Schools or a university, opportunities exist for Study Weekends and Vacation Study Breaks with B&B accommodation at Newton House.

FEES

For GCSE level and above, the fee scale ranges from £20 to £30, per hour of face-to-face tuition. There is no charge for my tuition-related work done outside the tutorials, such as preparation, marking, researching, phone or email consultations, or tips and clues to help students to progress. Fees  for Keystage tutorials are lower, on a scale ranging from £14 to £20 per hour.
